Scarlet Witch progress!

Description

In this picture the cape has been patterned, cut and is now draping with the lining to stretch out the bias before putting it all together. The rest is just pinned onto the dressform to give a visual! The actual costume will be accurate to the character, everything in the picture right now is just a bunch of fabric pinned onto the dressform at random to show off the fabric :D

What is there to say about this costume? First off, this is the first project I have been really scared of.

It isn't the hardest, most detailed or most expensive costume I've ever made but it definitely is one of the most important. We are jokingly calling Wanda my 'diva' costume of 2013 because everything has to be jussssst right. I spent a lot of time picking out the fabric for this costume because textiles are something that can really change the entire mood of a costume. I wanted to be classic Scarlet Witch with heavy inspiration from Jim Cheung and Adam Hughes so I went with classic fabric choices. This isn't the greatest picture for colour accuracy because our sewing room is quite dark, but you get the idea!

The cape, boots and gloves will all be made from the same crimson satin so they're a perfect match. I really wanted to have that uniform costumed look, rather than purchasing gloves or boots that would be a different shine or texture.

The bodice is a red and black shot (this means mostly red but with a black sheen/lowlights) taffeta which I felt really gave a cool dimensional and metallic look while staying within the 'classic' fabric range. I didn't want to use metallic spandex or vinyl at all for this costume. Once the bodice is sewn together there should be some really great definition along the curves and seamlines, its a little difficult to see that in this picture.

The lining is heavy satin in a deep red hue that is somewhere between merlot and red. I love it a lot because artists can never seem to decide on what colour the inside of Wanda's cape is, but in my favourite Adam Hughes art of Scarlet Witch it is EXACTLY this colour which really adds a lot of depth and maturity to what is a pretty oddly coloured outfit. It is one of those very weird colours that is extremely difficult to find, so I didn't look for it. Then while looking for fabric for another costume I spotted it in the clearance section and it happened to be the perfect tonal match for the rest of my colours.

Tip: Sometimes you'll see a fabric that looks great on the bolt, but when compared to your existing fabric just doesn't match nicely. This is the major reason I carry around a book with swatches of my other fabric for comparison.

Lastly the pink is a shiny milliskin purchased online. I really hate buying online because I CAN'T compare it to the rest of my fabric and stock photos are rarely accurate. I took a risk because I've heard the wrong side of the shiny milliskin had a really great texture and dull sheen, and was very happy! It doesn't look like spandex at all, and has a very nice texture and shine to it that isn't over the top and fit with the rest of my look.

So that's my fabric TL;DR for anyone crazy enough to want to read it! Other progress I've been making was adding to packages of extensions to my existing Wanda wig to make it truly huge. Go big or go home!

This looks AMAZING! I'm sorry to ask this, but how did you make the cape and the collar?
